Tony Couch received a BA degree in Art from the University of Tampa in 1951, did further work at Pratt Institute in New York while an artist for Associated Press. For years he was a freelance illustrator in New York, and studied watercolor painting with Edgar A. Whitney.
He has written three books on watercolor painting. His first, "WATERCOLOR" You Can Do It" was first published by Northlight Publishing in 1987. It went through several printings and became Northlight's all time best selling book on art. It was translated into Chinese for that market. It eventually went out of print, but last year was reprinted again in English.
A followup book on technique was also published by Northlight, and was eventually translated into Japanese. A third book, on design, was published a few years later.
He has written articles for several art publications, among them AMERICAN ARTIST, THE ARTIST, AUSTRALIAN ARTIST, WATERCOLOR MAGIC, and PALLETTE TALK. His work is included in 12 instruction books on painting by other authors in the US and the UK.
He has produced 10 "how to" video tapes on painting and drawing, some of which are used in College art departments, along with his books. The videos are also used by various state educational systems via TV. He conducts workshops throughout the US and abroad.
Couch has been elected to membership in the Academic Artists Association, Allied Artists of America, The HudsonValley Art Assn., Knickerbocker Artists, Salmagundi Club, Society of Marine Painters, Watercolor West, The Pittsburgh, Georgia, Southern and Midwest Watercolor Societies, as well as the Whiskey Painters of America.
He has won over 70 National awards, and his work has been included in three annual exhibitions of the National Academy of Design.
