- More information needed.
- Please contact the current president of Southern Watercolor Society or the web site editor if you have info.
- Georg Shook was one of the Founders of Southern Watercolor Society. Georg died in a tragic auto accident in Pensacola FL in 1995 or 96 according to Susan Diebolt who used to work with Georg at Memphis Publishing Company (The Commercial Appeal), where Georg was art director. .
- Source of the following: "40 Watercolorists and How They Work" by Susan E. Meyer, Watson-Guptill Publications
- "Watercolorist George Shook was born in Mississippi in 1932. A southern regionalist, Shook paints vestiges of the rural south. "I especially enjoy painting scenes that touch the viewer with nostalgia, like half remembered places of forgotten times." Shook has won several awards for his watercolors including three consecutive purchase awards in Watercolor USA. He has exhibited with The American Watercolor Society, Watercolor USA, Tennessee Watercolor Society, Central South and Mid-South Exhibitions. "I suppose every artist has a goal. Mine is simply to bring one closer to an unappreciated heritage, or to help someone rediscover the familiar, through my paintings."
- In 2006 Arni Anderson adds, "I don't know if this might help or not. but George lived in Memphis for a long time and if I'm not mistaken I think he was on the Memphis police force for some time. I know that his son was a policeman for Memphis."
- Thank you Arni, until we get a full bio on Georg we will take all the scraps we can get. Georg was a treasured member of Southern Watercolor Society. Anyone who has info please contribute.
- In 2006, Marilyn Hughey Phillis uncovered an old magazine article about Georg. Thanks Marilyn, here is a quote by Georg from the aritcle,
- "When asked to comment on or write about my art. I find it difficult to put my feelings into words. Perhaps this is why I paint. What I paint is the commonplace and how I paint it is with realism Waiercolor is my medium: it is dynamic, alive, vibrant and flexible To me, it is a bridge of communication through which I make my statement about the world around me. Watercolor is the most responsive medium to my needs as a painter.
My love of art has been a part of me all my life. The inclination to draw and paint evolved through the normal college and art school development levels into the field of professional art.
My original aspiration was to become a police sketch artist. This was soon changed when it became clear the field was narrow, and the scientific methods employed made it less than appealing. However, it was this first love of realism that led me to enter the world of representational painting through the "back door" of portraiture. And, beginning my career in the field of portrait painting increased my fascination with detail The necessity (or an exact likeness also helped develop my skill for drawing. However, a few years of trying to
please relatives and friends of the person I was painting, made the alternative of landscape painting more appealing. However, my respect for detailed drawing carried over into my painting of landscapes, to the point that my work was literally landscape portraiture
Like many artists involved in realistic and or representational painting, I have struggled over the difference that exists between literal painting and realistic expression. However. through growth or natural evolvement, my style has loosened considerably My paintings now contain more self-expression and emotional response to a particular scene, rather than being a literal interpretation of the subject.
Art is a means of communication I feel that art. without an audience, loses its validity. I love realism because the viewer does not need an education in art appreciation to understand a realistic painting. The statement I am trying to make, through my paintings, is easily understood by a large number of viewers.
On the other hand. I believe that artists should not concern themselves with whether they are abstract, representational, traditional or experimental modernists painters. They should paint in whatever style is comfortable or true and natural to themselves." Georg Shook
- Comment from A. Decker, Paragould, AR(90 miles northwest of Memphis) I'll share the last words George said to me: 'Keep producing beautiful work.' "
